The profession of e-commerce web designers
Citing e-commerce web designer on a CV sounds rather fancy and it can be a remarkably interesting and multifaceted job. Truly working as an e-commerce web designer is both challenging and rewarding. The job involves a plethora of activities, amongst which are the rather obvious ones, such as creating and developing websites, maintaining and adding content, oftentimes proofreading and revising content for e-commerce web designers.
There is also the more taxing duty of communicating with customers. Now, for the most part, they will be perfectly lovely and reasonable, however the odd exception will turn up. Sometimes a customer will come along that either has no idea what they want, or they already have everything planned down to a level of detail that isn’t feasible, at the very least not in the amount of time that is allocated for the project, which, funnily enough, is never enough anyway. But that is true for most projects in most professions, not just e-commerce web design.
Both cases are rather unpleasant, as the first will likely cause a ridiculous amount of extra work for the web designers, due to changes, and the second will cause a rather large likelihood of complaints and unhappiness on both sides, as a customer may ask for impossible things, but not accept the explanation that something is unreasonable, or perhaps not even in the best interest of the client.
That being said, working as a, or in a team of, e-commerce web designers is a very creative and, often, lucrative field of work. It requires higher education in computer science of course, however not necessarily a complete degree. Possible employers do prefer it, however skill alone accounts for a lot in this field, as does talent. As with most artistic professions a certain amount of talent goes a long way.

As for the real work an e-commerce designer does, as mentioned above, it can cover a field of things and often, individual designers will specialize in fields that interest them, such as e-commerce. That in itself is a rather wide field, however one that has a continuing growing market, with more and more companies requiring and expanding into e-commerce. Online businesses now overtake ‘real-life’ businesses in certain market areas, for a variety of reasons. Last year, the sales on black Friday and cyber Monday both, were done primarily in the web.
This would not be possible without the help and diligent work of e-commerce web designers. They are the sole reason we are able to do out shopping online when it’s raining out. Or not raining and we are simply lazy. But regardless of our reasoning, if we want to make an online purchase we can do so over the web, on a website designed by an e-commerce expert.
